IOC plans 4,500 drug tests in Beijing (TSN)
Drug Tests July 3rd, 2008GENEVA - The IOC said Wednesday its drug-testing program at the Beijing Olympics give by will be the most rigorous anti-doping effort in sports history.
The International Olympic Committee plans to conduct 4,500 tests in Beijing, up from 3,600 in Athens four years ago and 90 per cent more than in Sydney in 2000.
The IOC elect also ask Chinese police and security officers to act against suspected doping suppliers before and for the time of the Aug. 8-24 Games.
"The Beijing Games anti-doping striving will be the most comprehensive in sports history," said Prof. Arne Ljungqvist, chairman of the IOC medical commission, on a conference call.
"The quality of tests are better than ever," he added. "No criterion is 100 per cent, but we are certainly up to date and represent fully of the art, absolutely."
Ljungqvist dismissed a according to principles study published last month which claimed the official test to detect EPO, a blood-boosting hormone, did not work. The Danish study claimed that some people could take EPO without being caught.
"This was not a study designed to evaluate the quality of testing," Ljungqvist said. "The turning-point does not in my view have any relation to doping controls in sport."
He before-mentioned new testing kits to detect human growth hormone have been sent across the world for national and regional anti-doping teams to take out-of-competition samples.
The IOC takes over responsibility for doping controls when the athletes’ village opens in Beijing on July 27.
From that day, athletes can be asked to give samples free from notice at any time and in any place. National Olympic committees must provide minutiae of each athlete’s whereabouts in the same manner they can be found.
The doping control program includes near 700-800 animal-water tests for EPO and 900 royal line tests for HGH.
"We hope that with everything the precautions we are captivating - expanding the Olympic period where a lot of testing is going on and the expanded program that we have - that we deter people from falling into temptation," Ljungqvist.
He said a task force of officials from the IOC, World Anti-Doping Agency and Beijing organizing committee would act on intelligence and target suspicious cases.
"I was in China not that long ago in order to make sure to what extent we can realize help from Chinese authorities at games-time in Beijing," he declared. "We will not hesitate to refer any doping matters to law execution officials."
Ljungqvist said he welcomed the policy of China’session sports authorities to issue lifetime bans to their own athletes caught doping, even though the WADA code calls against a two-year suspension for a first offense.
Blood samples taken in Beijing volition be stored for eight years to allow scientists time to develop good in a higher degree tests with new technology.
He promised that athletes found cheating in Beijing would face past dispute punishment.
"Those caught should be stripped of their medals, as is every-day, and have their accreditation revoked … and be denied participation in the 2012 rivalship in London."
In a separate statement, IOC president Jacques Rogge related the anti-doping program was aimed at protecting clean athletes.
"Most athletes compete honestly and fairly," he said. "They treasure the Olympic experience. We owe it to these athletes - who train likewise hard - to ensure the games are in the same manner with free of prohibited drugs as possible."
