Children face random drug testing in schools, discos (EARTHtimes.org)
Drug Tests June 27th, 2008Hong Kong - Random drug tests could be introduced for teenage children in schools and discos as part of a package of measures considered by a government sponsored anti-narcotics group on Thursday. The Action Committee Against Narcotics could recruit doctors to carry out the compulsory and instant tests on a not old person’s saliva or urine in a attempt to curb drug use. An instant ground of admission kit to check for ecstasy or ketamine would cost less than 4 US dollars. The drug tests could be introduced later this year. The testing proposals fill identical spaces with a survey which showed 85 by cent of parents among 1,462 people were in favour of pressing testing. Action committee component Scarlett Pong said: “The testing can too originate a deterrent effect on children who want to take drugs.”Cheung Man-kwong, a lawmaker representing the education sector, before-mentioned the identity of any student who tested positive during the govern tests should be protected. He added: “The state should state there is not at all penalty, only therapy for the students who take drugs.”This latest initiative follows the exoneration of figures which show a marked rise in the volumes of drugs seized this year. Police said 30 kilograms of heroin was seized in the first five months of this year compared with 18 kilograms in 2007, while 35 kilograms of cocaine was discovered this year against 9 kilograms last year. Police also recovered 46 kilograms of ketamine between January and May compared with 34 kilograms in the same period last year.
